七月四日北卡佛光山傳授三皈五戒

北卡佛光山 (IBPS NC Temple) 于七月四日為慶祝正式啟用落成,下午舉辦首次「甘露灌頂三皈五戒典禮」,提供社會人士受戒因緣,淨化人心。並恭請「人間福報」發行人心定和尚為逾130位戒子主持三皈五戒典禮,芝加哥滿普法師、波士頓三佛中心覺屏法師、西來寺覺懺法師、如松法師、邁阿密妙華法師等前來支援。戒子中多為新戒,近三十皈依,除本地信徒外,還有近30位來自德州、佛州、阿拉巴馬州、馬利蘭州、維吉尼亞州等地,不少人把握因緣一家一同受戒,年紀少的只有1歲,大部份戒子為美藉人士。 典禮前,監寺永瀚法師為戒子詳細講解儀軌程序,隨後由四位戒子班首代表戒子迎請和尚為大眾授戒,主持三皈五戒典禮。和尚為眾人講授皈依佛法僧及求受五戒:不殺生、不偷盜、不邪淫、不妄語、不飲酒的意義,並慈悲特別以中英文雙語正授,使得外語人士也因能順利完成三皈五戒,每位戒子都以歡喜又虔誠的心宣誓,受得清淨滿分戒。

典禮後和尚叮嚀戒子受戒後要時時提醒自已,觀照自已,多利用我們豐富的道場資源來充實自已。戒子們個個都法喜充滿。常住以念珠及小叢書與戒子結緣。

2009年华联歌手大奖赛将在本周六(十月二十四日)晚拉开帷幕。本次报名参赛的选手共有27位,年龄从二十到八十岁,来自当地大学、企业、科研单位以及政府部门。还有已经退休的歌唱爱好者,是历届歌手大奖赛中年龄跨度最大的一次。在本周六的预赛中将由评委会选出15位优胜者参加十月三十一日的决赛。参赛的选手都是颇有实力的歌唱爱好者,预赛的角逐将会非常激烈。请亲临现场,欣赏他们高水平的表扬,并为他们加油。

A Chinese Delegation will be hold on Nov.1, 2009. Officers from Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, Ministry of Science and Technology, Academy of Macroeconomic Research at Department of Project Planning and Management and National Development and Reform Commission of People Republic of China will offer insight into challenges and opportunities in China and also answer questions at this event.

China Hour radio is a pan Chinese – American cultural radio program (or Hua Xia), a voice of ethnic Chinese in North Carolina, with programming covering Chinese culture, international and local news, music, travel, and personal perspectives.

We are currently having a competition for its website design that ends on 12:00am Sept. 28. The winning designer will be awarded $200 cash and also receive recognition on the site and during occasional broadcasts (Frequency to be determined by the program manager) while China Hour (Great Wall Media) owns the copyright of the design.

The following are the guidelines for the competition:

Content should include, but not limited to:

  • 1. Listen Live function and archived shows
  • 2. Mission, team member bio with pictures, including board members
  • 3. Community Calendar
  • 4. DJ blog that should be inclusive to add Listener comments
  • 5. Contact information
  • 6. sponsor information
  • 7. Listener comments/community
  • 8. Online donation function
  • 9. Graphics and links to social networking. i.e. Facebook, Myspace, etc.
  • 10. English is the main language. Bilingual (Chinese and English) designs should use simplified Chinese but must include the English equivalents.
  • Design/format:

  • 1. modern and also reflects its Chinese root; It also need to flow with the existing program Logo that is attached in this letter
  • 2. easy to navigate
  • 3. appropriate for media/radio
  • 4. aesthetically pleasing
  • Technical Requirements:

  • 1. THe files can be created entirely or in part with Flash or Photoshop or other graphic programs. Preferences will be given to interactive designs.
  • 2. Designer should provide all files, .xml, .psd, html. .fla and .swf, etc
  • 3. Must be compatible with Internet Explorer versions 6 and higher, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Safari. Should show equally well in all browsers. Should also include an html version for systems that cannot display active content.
  • 4. Any coded examples must be compatible with Microsoft server technologies, classic asp, or asp.net 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5.

    In next two weeks, China Hour is bringing you a story of a Chinese Gu Zheng Soloist, Jennifer Chan, who currently resides in Cary, North Carolina.

    A former member of the Association of China Musicians, the Chinese Symphony Orchestra of Conservatories, the Chinese Symphony Orchestra of Xi'an and ShaanXi Opera and Ballet Theatre, Jennifer Chan has received many awards and has been a celebrated performer at many Chinese art festivals and national events. While in China, she also received many recording contracts for Cd's, movie soundtracks and Chinese television. As a celebrated Gu Zheng Soloist, Jennifer has performed as an honored guest in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and throughout the United States. Two of her most notable performances were as a soloist for the Emperor of Japan and former United States President, Bill Clinton.

    In 2007, Jennifer performed with the North Carolina Symphony presenting a concerto conducted by Grant Llewellyn. The concert was named by the Raleigh News and Observers' Roy C. Dicks as; “One of the season's most enjoyable concerts.” Jennifer was also the first Chinese musician to introduce Gu Zheng music to the world of ballet in North America when she performed a solo accompaniment for the ballet “Ballet Festival”, created by the Carolina Ballet's artistic director, Robert Weiss.

    Dr. Xuguang Guo will be our guest in this week's interview of Chinese in America.

    Dr. Guo got his Ph.D at UNC Chapel Hill. After that, he worked as senior scientist in Constella Corp. and now he is the senior statistician in Westat in RTP.

    Dr. Guo devotes himseld in Chinese Community for many years as principal of Chinese School at Chapel Hill and President of the Chinese-American Friendship Association (CAFA) in RTP area.

    John came to the US in 1962. Upon completing his graduate degrees from Louisville (MSCHE) and Princeton (MA, PhD), he joined Celanese Corporate Research Laboratory in Summit, New Jersey. He held a number of positions and became the head of new business development in the Cellulose Acetate Division. He was appointed Managing Director of SciMat Limited in UK, until his retirement in 2002.

    During his professional career, John was instrumental in commercializing Celanese engineering plastic, the Vectra liquid crystal polymer. He was appointed the world wide sales manager of Vectra in 1987. In1991, he was promoted to the business manager of Celanese cigarette tow product for the Asia Pacific region. He was appointed to the position, new business development manager, in 1995. Two major new applications of cellulose acetate fibers were since launched and commercialized, the first since 1956.

    Since his retirement, John has been devoting literally full time in volunteer work with several organizations to develop, nurture and build better interactions between various Asian community groups and citizens of the Charlotte community. He is the Vice Chairman of the Carolinas Asian-American Chamber of Commerce, a Board member of the United Way of Central Carolinas, the Chinese American Association of Charlotte and advisor to the Chinese Phoenix Arts and the founder and president of the Charlotte Dragon Boat Association. He was on the Board and the past Chair of the Baoding Committee in Charlotte Sister Cities, and a member of the Mecklenbrug Park & Recreation South Park District Advisory Council.

    John is married to Julie, with two sons, Andrew and Vincent.

    Yu Hua, an often-named candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature, will discuss his creative process. From his avant-garde fiction in the 1980s, to his award-winning novel, "To Live"(1992), to his latest bestseller in China, "Brothers"(2005), Yu Hua’s fiction provokes controversies and intrigues readers.

    Reviews of "Brothers", short-listed for the 2008 Man Asian Literary Prize, call it "a tremendous novel in tone and historical scope and narrative technique" (NPR) and "one of the great literary achievements" of the year ("Boston Globe"). "The only response possible to its not winning [the Man Asian Prize] is that the novel that did win must have been magnificent indeed" ("Taipei Times").

    Duke Chinese Media Program and Asian Studies Department of UNC will organize a Round-table Panel on Media and US-China Relations at UNC-Chapel Hill on March 13, 2009 Friday 2:00--4:00 p.m. at 219 New West Hall, Cameron Ave. (across Memorial Hall).

    Liu Kang, Professor and Director of Duke Chinese Media Program, and Scott Savitt, Research Fellow at Duke Chinese Media Program and former UPI and LA Times correspondant in Beijing, will be moderators. Participants include 14 senior officials in charge of media and communication from Guangzhou government, headed by Ms. Ye Min, Director of Guangzhou Information Office. The panel will be conducted primarily in Chinese. The event is open to the general public.

    Dr. Bailian Li

    Many Chinese immigrants came to the U.S. first as a student, especially graduate student. Have you noticed the differences between the educational systems in China and in U.S.? Maybe, you or your siblings will not be so frustrated with applying the American graduate schools anymore because there are alternative ways nowadays for the Chinese students who are interested in studying in U.S. In this week’s interview, we will talk with Dr. Bailian Li, who is the vice provost of NCSU, and have worked in the academia for more than 20 years, Dr. Li will tell us some of the trends in internationalizing higher education and share his views on the differences of education between U.S. and China.
